Tony's Bike Ride

Another eventful challenge is over, and another BIG thanks is in order for all my sponsors who have helped me hit my target of £3,000, raised for the William Merritt Centre in Leeds, a charity who provide assistance and advise to the elderly and disabled people of the region with a view to helping them live independently in their homes – a very worthy cause I feel. It takes my sponsorship over the £10,000 mark after 3 such challenges so thanks to everyone who has helped me support worthy causes..

From my point of view, a 32 hour delay leaving the UK and over 50 hours travelling to get to Burma (or Mayanmar as it is now known), made the challenge one of the hardest I have done, especially the first few days. We had no time to prepare, acclimatise or get over the travelling and jet lag as we were thrown straight into tough hilly cycling which had extra miles added each day to make up for the lost time. 8 or 9 litres of water a day were required to prevent dehydration in the 40 degree heat and for a while I wish I wasn’t there. But that’s what such challenges are all about – never meant to be easy!

That said, it was a privilege to visit Burma (Mayanmar) as it was closed to any foreign visitors only 3 or so years ago. Tourism is very much in its infancy, without a fast food joint anywhere in the whole country (that will change in 2016 when KFC plan to open the first such outlet in Rangoon the capital). As always in these places, the people are poor compared to us, but are always very happy and grateful to meet us and engage with us.
